Reno is the county seat of Washoe County, Nevada and is located 45 minutes from Lake Tahoe and 26 miles from the state capital, Carson City. Reno is known as “The biggest Little City in the World” and is renown for its casinos. In fact, it’s the birthplace of Harrah’s Entertainment.
Reno is a world-class tourist destination that offers more than one would first think. Reno also has a rich arts scene, and year-round activities, many of which take place in the Reno Events Center. The Truckee Meadows of Northern Nevada is a valley which covers approximately 10 square miles and contains the cities of Reno and Sparks. It was settled in the 1850s and named for the Truckee River. The valley offered fertile and established farms and retail shops to serve travelers along the California Trail.
The Virginia and Truckee Railroad extension into Reno in 1872 further boosted the economy, and Reno continued to develop as a business and agricultural center. More recently, Reno has experienced a growing economy with plenty of new home construction. Reno has 10 public high schools and shares 3 high schools and 16 middles schools and 62 elementary schools with neighboring Sparks. The Nevada School of Law at Old College is located in Reno as well, and a trade school, Career College of Northern Nevada trains students in technical fields that support fast-growing industries.
