About Fernley Nevada

Fernley, Nevada is a newer city, incorporated in 2001.  Prior to its incorporation, it was a census-designated place and as of the 2000 census, boasted of a population of just over 8,500.  As of 2006, the population has increased to almost 19,000 making it the fastest growing city in Nevada.  The beginnings of Fernley go back to 1904 when it was developed as an agricultural and ranching community.  In fact, the first one-room school house in Fernley still stands and today serves as the home of the Fernley Chamber of Commerce today.  Fernley is located in Lyon County, about 30 miles east of the Reno-Sparks metropolitan  area.  The city offers access to the many amenities found in the area, especially including affordable housing, which may be one of the factors contributing to its rapid growth.

Climate in Fernley

Typical of high desert environments, Fernley has cold winter temperatures with some snowfall, but not in extreme amounts.  The summers here are usually hot and very dry, with average annual rainfall of about five inches per year.

 


Education in Fernley

The Lyon County School District has 3 elementary schools, one intermediate school, and one high school with over 2,200 students enrolled in Pre-K through 12th grade.  Located close to Fernley is the University of Nevada-Reno, and two community colleges.  Of the adult population in Fernley, ages 25 and older, more than 2,000 have some college or an associate’s degree and over 18% have either a Bachelor’s, Master’s or doctorate degree.

Things to do in Fernley

Being close to Reno makes all the things to do in the Reno-Sparks area available to the residents of Fernley.  But closer to home you'll find many family activities including Babe Ruth and Little League ball, girls’ softball, soccer, youth football, and junior rodeo, as well as MX racing, swimming, a skate part, 18-hole golf course, tennis, camping, hunting, and fishing on several area lakes.  Also within a short distance of Fernley are historic ghost towns and mine sites, a Pony Express station, and Native American Petroglyphs you can visit.
