In 1869, Elko was founded as the railhead for the White Pine mines. However, after the area was “mined out”, Elko’s cattle industry seemed likely the reason it was dubbed “the last real cowtown in the American West”. More recently however, with new and sophisticated mining technologies, mining has again turned this once “cowtown” into a prosperous city.
